Byron joined OPK in February 1982 as a Charter Member. He was a former member and Past Distinguished President of the Kiwanis Club of Oceanside.
Byron is a Distinguished Past President of OPK. He is a recipient of the Will Blake-Bob Sample Service Award, the Distinguished Kiwanian Award and is a Kiwanis International Hixson Fellow.
He is a Founder of the Oceanside Yacht Club. He was Staff Commodore in 1965 and Staff Commodore of the San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs. He received the Alonzo De Jessup Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Yachting in 1996.
Byron is the traditional Santa at OPK's Annual Kids Christmas Party, at OPK's Annual Christmas Party and covered Santa's role until the closing of Ditmar School.
